Thanks to Kees Janeway for working with our distributors to curate the new Wines of the Month Club.
Each month, there will be a new selection of wines - three value wines and three premium wines - all selected for their quality and uniqueness. This is a great way to discover new wines as well as keep the wife happy. It's like a wine dinner, but at home!
There are four different packages:
Soft Baller: Three value bottles ($50)
Hard Baller: Three premium bottles ($100)
Rackets Player: One of each bottle, six bottles in total ($150)
Golden Rackets Player: Two of each of the premium bottles, six bottles in total ($200)
Please email Glenn at manager@detroitracquetclub.com with your desired level for this month. The wines will be available to pick up at the Club. Next month, you can decide if you'd like to remain at that level or adjust your order for February's offerings. If you find a new favorite wine, you can order more through Glenn as well.
This month's offerings:
Value Wines
JACQUES DUMONT Sauvignon Blanc, Loire Valley
100% Sauvignon Blanc from France’s Loire Valley. An ideal region for growing Sauvignon Blanc thanks to its chalky, limestone soils which impart the signature minerality of Sauvignon Blanc from the region. Jacques Dumont farms sustainably with grower/farmer partners in Saumur, Touraine, and Pays Nantais. Fermentation and aging is done entirely in stainless steel tanks.
Round and lush, followed by bracing citrus and exotic fruit flavors and the crisp minerality. A perfect alternative if you love Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre.
SELLA & MOSCA Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva, Sardinia
The Mediterranean Island of Sardinia is home to idyllic beaches, rugged mountains, and some of Italy’s finest wines. Founded in 1899, Sella & Mosca is in the care of the Moretti family. Sella & Mosca vineyards are certified organic and interspersed with native trees and plants to promote biodiversity. They use only estate-grown grapes.
Cannonau is the Sardinian name for that darling Mediterranean grape, Grenache. Bright aromas of cranberry and hibiscus and richer with plums, tobacco and a swirl of chocolate and vanilla. Figs and a potent florality underscore the plum note on the palate, before the chocolate current swells into a tidal wave on the finish.
FELINO Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza
Viña Cobos is the acclaimed winery founded by international winemaker Paul Hobbs in 1999. Twenty years on and Viña Cobos is one of the most respected producers of single-vineyard Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in Argentina.
By far the largest and best-known winemaking province in Argentina is Mendoza in the eastern foothills of the Andes Mountains. Sunny and dry, the best vineyards are at high altitudes and benefit from ample snowmelt from the Andes.
Well-concentrated with velvety tannins, this full-bodied wine boasts pure blackberry and black cherry flavors and a hearty drinkability. Black pepper and tobacco accents show up first on the nose and interlace on the palate with rather full tannins.
Premium Wines
FERRARI Sparkling Brut, Trentino
Ferrari is Italy’s most iconic sparkling wine! Founded by Giulio Ferrari, a Trentino native, in 1902 after studying winemaking in France. Ferrari wines consistently receive some of Italy’s top accolades, including being awarded Tre Bicchieri 22 years in a row.
With its mountain viticulture (the Dolomites), Trentino is an area well-suited to the production of sparkling wines of great elegance and complexity. 100% Chardonnay, Ferrari’s sparkling is made in the same labor-intensive (and expensive) method as French Champagne.
Enticing aromas of preserved lemon peel, ripe yellow apples and a whisper of honey leap from the glass. The palate is full and expressive, with Mandarin orange-inflected citrus tones taking center stage, supported by a creamy mousse and energetic acidity.
LINGUA FRANCA ESTATE ‘Tongue N’ Cheek’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
Lingua Franca was founded by Master Sommelier Larry Stone in 2012. Widely respected as one of the top winemakers in Burgundy, Dominique Lafon joined Larry Stone to craft uniquely expressive wines harnessing the unique terroir of Oregon.
Oregon’s Willamette Valley is one of the few areas of the world that has the right conditions to make stellar Pinot Noir, one of the most fickle, thin-skinned grapes around. The combination of the cool climate, volcanic soil and an intense passion for well-crafted Pinot Noir results in world-class wines, year after year.
Cherry and red currant scents are accompanied by floral, succulent herb and exotic spice. Juicy red and blue fruit, lavender, cola and mocha flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens. Focused and impressively long with silky tannins and resonating cherry pit and floral notes.
LA STORIA by TRENTADUE Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley
Trentadue is a family-owned winery with rich Italian heritage. For over 55 years they have a history of growing premium wine grapes on their Alexander Valley estate vineyard, with some vines dating back to 1886. Originally the Trentadue family’s top tier of wines, La Storia evolved into its own brand, for which the family now includes some purchased grapes to augment their estate-grown fruit.
Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley.
A bold and warmly spiced wine, this bottle wraps gentle tannins around super ripe and chocolaty flavors for a mouth-filling and supple effect. Cinnamon, cloves and mint decorate the juicy black cherry and blueberry flavors.
